Wedding Dress Makeover Ideas

Very few wedding dresses can be used for anything else and given the variety of tastes it is a longshot to expect one’s daughters or granddaughter will want (or be able) to wear one’s dress. Instead of hiding this gown in a dark box rarely if ever opened, do something special with it. There are two vastly different purposes a former bride might have in mind. The first: in honor of a special anniversary create an ensemble to wear as part of the celebration. The second: a special renovation of a wedding dress to wear in celebration of a divorce. Of course, there is a third reason for a wedding dress makeover and that is that simply there is a potential for something beautiful to wear for special events.

If your gown was understated, (for example, a white suite, or short dress) the easiest thing to do is dye it some rich dark or bright color so totally diametrical to wedding colors that no one would ever suspect its origins. If it has a train, that can be removed and used to create a bolero or over the shoulder throw. Or the skirt can be re-cut and re-hemmed to a shorter length. If it has beads or pearls or stones or sequins, those can be removed and used to create one of a kind jewelry for you – or for gifts or heirlooms.

A simple freshwater pearl necklace such as Sweet Serenade in my etsy shop, is one small example of the use of pearls and beads.

It’s all about imagination!
