Mastery of Style: Where We Are Now

Time to take a breath and take a look of what we’ve covered so far. Hopefully you’ve had a lot to think about and this pause will let you put it all together in your mind, both conscious and subconscious.

We began with the obligatory course introduction where I presented some terms, definitions and concepts as well as a short list of some of the topics to be covered. I also asked you to think about how you define your own personal style (both dress and environment). If you’ve thought about these, you probably came to realize that feeling content and remarkable were part of how you know when you’ve touched your style preferences.

The following Monday, we delved more deeply into how style is defined. We considered how art and technology can influence each other as well as do concurrent politics and social morés. An example of this is the change from coreseted women to free-wheeling flappers in little more than a generation. Or perhaps less.

Next I asked you to consider your own taste evolution (or, for some, revolution) in the post, Your Tastes Over Time: Color & Texture. I spiced up the basic discussion by the inclusion of two simple score keeping games; one for color tastes and the other for texture preferences. Color is a common fashion topic but texture can be just as important to many people.

Then with last week’s post, When Mood Affects Style, I wrote about this important aspect of anyone’s personal style. In that post I brought home the individuality of style. It might seem easiest to just follow the trends, but that isn’t who any of us really are.

If you haven’t played the games, I’d love it if you would try them now. Perhaps you’ll be amused by the results, or even, enlightened.

Have you thought about your style yet?
